[PBL] Trigger #1

[PBL] Trigger #1

  1. Understanding the differences between Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences

(Include reputation, perceptions, teaching methods and views)

Mission:
University: “conduct scientific research and provide instruction and postgraduate education based on it.” (Ministry of Education and Culture)

UAS: “train professionals in response to labour market needs and conduct R&D&I which supports instruction and promotes regional development in particular.”

Based on the definition, Universities focus much more on theoretical research, when UAS focus on training students for labour market. Because of that, theoretically UAS are more suitable for working life (work in company with medium skills).

Teaching methods:
UAS: easy on theories, focus on groupworks and pratices. This is quite true in Haaga-Helia UAS. Some people comes from others UAS said those UAS are quite incompetence.

Universities: Focus on learning theories, individual works and research.

Quantity:

Universities: 14

UAS: 23

Statistics about employment:

Most of students from UAS go directly to work after graduation, when much more students from University continue to higher studies (32,1%). This can be interpreted that UAS aim build up skills fit to labour market (medium rank/positions in company structues) right after students finish studies , when universities tends to provide

The unemployment rate in UAS (10,6%) is much more higher than Universities (1,8%). One of the reason is graduates in universities continue to study so they don’t need to have a job.

  1. How do Universities of Applied science create competent individuals that match the needs of the labor market?

From the analysis upon, UAS are suitable for certain type of students: not so academic, learn by experience better than by theory.

Workforces come from UAS account for large amount of labour market, which must suitable for the market. A competent individuals means that this person have enough theoretical knowledge along with skills.

UAS can provide sufficient amout of theoretical knowlegde, which enough to work in organisations.

UAS also focus on improve skills. For example in Haaga-Helia, skills such as complex problems solving and crititical thinking are focused through classed and different study methods, such as PBL.
